What Bible Version Do You Like??

Post by branham1965 » Mon Feb 19, 2018 2:06 am

I love the King James Version the best.

And i like the American Standard Version of 1901.

Most scholars think it is the most accurate English version ever produced.

it was called the rock of Biblical honesty.

i like the New American Standard Bible too.

it is a great translation.

I think there was another thread on this, but cannot remember. I have quite a number of versions, yet it seems that I always wind back up at the trusty KJV. I really don't know why that is. I guess I got used to the KJV words after all these years.

The Olde King James is my favourite.

I do like to compare and contrast other versions.

For instance, compare the American Standard Version's rendering of this verse with the King James Version:
  • Exodus 25:5 American Standard Version
    • ...and rams' skins dyed red, and sealskins, and acacia wood...
  • Exodus 25:5 King James Version
    • And rams' skins dyed red, and badgers' skins, and shittim wood..
There is a disagreement between the two as to which type of skin it is... Badgers aren't seals and seals aren't badgers...

Things that are different are not the same...

So, one of these two Bibles has an error, here. Perhaps, both do?

I'd imagine that finding seals in Egypt or in the desert would be hard. They're an ocean animal, right?

But, then, I've read that badgers didn't live there either.

Quite a conundrum.

Perhaps, to settle this, we should check with the New American Standard Version...
  • Exodus 25:5 New American Standard Bible (1995 Update)
    • ... rams' skins dyed red, porpoise skins, acacia wood...
Wow! A third animal!!!! But, porpoises? Seriously? Where were they going to get porpoises in the desert? Go back to the Nile and catch them while they were swimming upriver?

Was it badgers', seals', or porpoise skins?

Perhaps, another version can clear it up!?!?!?!

How about the Holman Christian Standard Bible, the official Bible of the Southern Baptists Convention, if I recall correctly?
  • Exodus 25:5 Holman Christian Standard Bible
    • ... ram skins dyed red and manatee skins; acacia wood...
Uh oh! Another animal. Manatees!

In the desert? Are you serious?

Now, I like manatees. My dad and I were surprised by a really big one in the ocean a couple years ago. They are BIG animals. Slow, but big. Great animals.

But, no matter how much I like them, I can't tell which of these Bibles is telling the truth as to what the animal was. Was it badgers? Seals? Porpoise? Or, manatees?

Let's check another version!

How about the New Living Translation? I remember hearing that Billy Graham likes this version. Surely he would recommend a rock solid version that can tell me what animal's skin was being used here!
  • Exodus 25:5 New Living Translation, Second Edition
    • ... tanned ram skins and fine goatskin leather; acacia wood...
Goatskin! :-|

Seriously... That's a fifth animal... What are these translators trying to do? Confuse me? :-|

Surely God isn't this hard to understand and He didn't stutter when He told Moses which animal they needed to use for the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. So, if the problem isn't with God, the truth of the matter must have gotten lost in at least four out of five of these translations.

Which one do you trust?

Luke 12:4‭-‬5 King James Version
"And I say unto you my friends, be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear Him, which after He hath killed hath power to cast into Hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear Him."

Moffat has ram's skins, acacia wood.
YLT has it...rams skins made red, and badgers skins, and shittim wood.
NIV has it rams skins, sea cows and acacia wood.
NAB has it rams skins dyed red and hyacinth, acacia wood.
I like the last one.

I like several versions, I find each has its strengths and weaknesses. For preaching and some teaching I like a more literal translation. For study literal. For devotional I like thought for thought. Nowadays with parallel Bibles you can have both. My favorites are the NKJV, ESV NLT, NASB, and NIV. I tend to use the NKJV & NLT the most.

The Septuagint renders it thus....And ram's skins dyed red and blue and incorruptible wood.
