‘Large scale’ Israeli raids hit Iranian targets in Syria
ISRAEL has launched a ‘large scale attack’ against Iranian and Syrian targets in one of the most serious face-offs between the foes.

ISRAEL has struck a dozen Syrian and Iranian targets inside Syria after an Israeli fighter jet crashed under fire from Syrian air defences, the military said.
The Israeli military said its planes struck 12 targets today including three aerial defence batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria.

In a statement, the US State Department said it was “deeply concerned about today’s escalation of violence over Israel’s border and strongly supports Israel’s sovereign right to defend itself.”.
The confrontation was the most serious between arch foes Israel and Iran since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011.
Israel’s raids came after it intercepted what it said was an Iranian drone entering its airspace from Syria.
It marked the first time Israel publicly acknowledged attacking what it identified as Iranian targets in Syria since the war began.
The Israeli military issued a warning to Tehran, saying it was responsible for the drone that entered Israel, which it labelled an “attack.”

It said its reprisals after the exchange were “large-scale” raids.
“A few minutes ago, (Israeli aircraft) ... targeted the Syrian Aerial Defence System and Iranian targets in Syria,” a military statement said.
“Twelve targets, including three aerial defence batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria were attacked.”
Israel has repeatedly warned in recent weeks against the presence of Iranian forces in neighbouring Syria.

The Israeli pilots of the crashed F16 were reported alive, although one was severely wounded.
According to the Israeli military, the confrontation began with a drone entering its airspace.
Israeli forces identified an “Iranian UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle)” launched from Syria and intercepted it in Israeli airspace with a combat helicopter, a statement said.
They then “targeted the Iranian control systems in Syria that sent the UAV into Israeli airspace,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus tweeted.
“Massive Syrian anti-air fire, one F16 crashed in Israel, pilots safe.” Police said the F16 crashed in the Jezreel valley in northern Israel.

It was not clear if the jet crashed as a direct result of the Syrian fire. According to a separate military statement, “multiple anti-aircraft missiles were fired at IAF (Israel air force) aircraft.” “The pilots of one of the aircraft abandoned as per procedure. The pilots landed in Israeli territory and were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.”
Conricus said the army had confirmed “accurate hits of (the) Iranian UAV control facility” in Syria.
“Iran is responsible for this severe violation of Israeli sovereignty,” Conricus said on Twitter.
Syria said its air defences repelled two Israeli raids on its military bases in the centre of the country, hitting more than one warplane during the first.
“At dawn, the Zionist enemy carried out a new aggression against one of our military bases in the centre of the country,” state news agency SANA reported.
“Our air defences repelled it and hit more than one plane.” The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the seven-year civil war, said the Israeli raids had targeted several military bases in the east of the central province of Homs.
It said the bases are used by both Iranian and Russian military personnel deployed in support of the regime.

Air raid sirens had gone off in Israel in the early hours of the morning following the UAV interception and raids.
The army said it was “monitoring events and is fully prepared for further action, depending on assessments and necessity.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has held a series of meetings in recent months with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Iran’s influence in war-torn Syria and Lebanon.
Netanyahu has been seeking to persuade Russia to limit Iran’s presence near Israeli territory and to stop it from entrenching itself militarily in Syria.
Russia, Iran and Lebanon’s Shiite Muslim militant group Hezbollah — which is backed by Tehran — all support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.

In a meeting in Moscow last month, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s concerns of what he described as the attempts of Iran to establish a military presence in Syria and produce accurate weapons against Israel there.
“We won’t accept either of those, and will act according to our needs,” Netanyahu said following the meeting with Putin.
Israel remain technically at war with Syria and occupies a swath of the strategic Golan Heights that it seized in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed in a move never recognised by the international community.
On Tuesday, Netanyahu took members of his security cabinet for a tour of the Israeli-occupied side, where they were briefed by the military on the situation.
“We want peace, but are prepared for any scenario, and suggest that nobody tries us,” he said.
Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the Syrian war, but acknowledges carrying out dozens of air strikes there to stop what it says are advanced arms deliveries to Hezbollah.

US defends Israel as Iranian tensions rise
Israel's military says its planes have struck Iranian targets in Syria amid an escalation of hostilities in the region, but Iran says they're lying.

Anti-aircraft fire has downed an Israeli warplane returning from a bombing raid on Iran-backed positions in Syria in the most serious confrontations yet between Israel and Iranian-backed forces based across the border.
The F-16, one of at least eight Israeli planes dispatched in response to what Israel said was an Iranian drone's incursion into its airspace earlier in the day, was hit by a Syrian anti-aircraft missile and crashed in northern Israel, an Israeli official told Reuters.
Both pilots ejected and were injured, one critically.
Israel then launched a second and more intensive air raid, hitting what it said were 12 Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria, including Syrian air defence systems.
Separately, a Revolutionary Guards' official on Saturday said he could not confirm the report because Israelis were "liars".
"Reports of downing an Iranian drone flying over Israel and also Iran's involvement in attacking an Israeli jet are so ridiculous," state TV quoted Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi as saying.
Israel and Syria signalled they were not seeking wider conflict, even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rushed to military headquarters in Tel Aviv and the pro-Assad alliance pledged a strong response to any Israeli "terrorist action".
"Israel seeks peace, but we will continue to defend ourselves steadfastly against any attack against us or any attempt by Iran to establish itself against us in Syria," Netanyahu said in a televised statement.
Russia, whose forces began intervening on behalf of Assad in 2015, expressed its concern and urged both sides to exercise restraint and avoid escalation.
The US has backed Israel's hawkish stance on Iran, and declared containing Tehran's influence an objective of its Syria policy.
"The Department of Defence did not participate in this military operation," Pentagon spokesman Adrian Rankine-Galloway said on Saturday.
"We share the concerns of many throughout the region that Iran's destabilising activities ... threaten international peace and security, and we seek greater international resolve in countering Iran's malign activities," Rankine-Galloway said.
Israel has long maintained air superiority in the region, mounting air strikes in Syria on a regular basis, targeting suspected weapons shipments to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah said in a statement: "Today's developments mean the old equations have categorically ended."
Iranian and Iran-backed Shi'ite forces, including Hezbollah, have deployed widely in Syria in support of Assad. Iran's military chief warned Israel last October against breaching Syrian airspace and territory.
The Israeli military said it did not seek escalation, calling its action a defensive response to an Iranian act of aggression.
