Re: DANIEL NOT CHRONOLOGICAL?

If you look in The Reese Chronological Bible published by Bethany House Publishers that is pretty much the order he has Daniel laidout.

There is some evidence of this since part of the Book is written in Hebrew and other parts in Aramaic.

Here is a part of a discussion found at http://www.spiritandtruth.org/teaching/ ... slides.pdf
Take it at for what it is worth. I can't and won't speak to the accuracy of the info on the site. But it is interesting none the less
If the chapters were to be arranged in chronological order while
noting the primary language of their composition (H = Hebrew, A = Aramaic) they
would run as follows: 1H, 2A, 3A, 4A, 7A, 8H, 5A, 6A, 9H, 10H, 11H, 12H. In
chronological order, chapters 7 (the first year of Belshazzar) and 8 (the third year of
Belshazzar) would appear between chapters 4 (Nebuchadnezzar’s reign) and 5 (the
last year of Belshazzar). The question naturally arises as to why the presentation order
differs from the chronological order? From the perspective of language, the Hebrew of
chapter 8 would have divided the Aramaic section if it were not relocated. Since
chapter 8 expands upon information provided within chapter 7, it may be that both
chapters 7 and 8 were relocated beyond chapter 6 so as to maintain the Aramaic
section undivided. Another factor may be the previously-mentioned distinction between
historical narration vs. visions and their exposition. Chapters 7 and 8 both concern
revelation primarily given to Daniel. By positioning this material following chapter 6, the
emphasis of the first part of the book on historical narration and the second part of the
book on visions is maintained without fragmentation.

In his notes on Daniel, Dake points out that the visions of chapters 7 and 8 actually came before the events recorded in chapter 6, with chapter 5 following 7 and 8.

Chapter 7 was a vision in the 1st year of Belshazzar; chapter 8 was a vision in his 3rd year. Chapter 5 records events of his final night. The reason Dake suggests for the chronological re-arrangement is perhaps the desire of the author to keep all the prophetic material of chapters 7-12 together.

Daniel 9 records a vision given about 1 year after chapter 8.
Daniel 10 records a vision given about 5 years later.
Chapters 10-12 all deal with the same vision. There is no reason to come up with a chapter realignment in them.

Hi Dolph,

I guess I wouldn't say 99% chronological, if you are referring to the order in which the material is presented in our English Bibles. For example, the books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther are post-exilic books, but come before the writings of David and Solomon in our Bibles. Most of the prophets, even though they come near the end of our Bibles, actually fit in with the time frame of the Divided Kingdom (1-2 Kings and 1-2 Chronicles).

Go get yourself a Chronological Bible. Reese is probably the best known.
But there are many others in most major translations.
Also you can find Chronological Bible Reading plans by doing searches on the internet.

Remember everyone has a slightly different idea on the Chronology of the Bible. In some plans Daniel may be read in written order in others chapters are moved around.
